MTS targets one-third revenue from data by 2011

India’s fastest growing mobile telecom brand MTS, promoted by Sistema Shyam Teleservices (SSTL), hopes to earn one-third of its revenue from data and value-added services by 2011. As part of the revised focus on data, the CDMA services company launched internet-enabled smartphones in Chennai on Monday.

“It’s been 11 months since we changed our focus from voice to data. About 10 per cent of our revenue comes from data cards,” said Cheenu Seshadri, chief strategy officer, SSTL.

“The three-pronged strategy to achieve our data target includes launch of smartphones starting Rs 5,000; the launch of CDMA bundled services on Blackberry and Android phones in the next 40 days; and introduction of open-market handsets like Samsung CDMA phones.”

MTS has launched the MicroMax, ZTE and Fly smartphones with up to 3.1 mbps internet connectivity and the devices can also be used as data cards for laptops. The three models launched are Buzz, Alive and Ivory priced at Rs 4,999, Rs 5,999 and Rs 12,999 respectively.

Said K Sunil, COO of Tamil Nadu and Kerala circles of MTS, “We launched post-paid services in Tamil Nadu a couple of months ago and that was the first step towards tapping the enterprise market. Though we have 24 handset models at present, the costliest phone is only Rs 4,500.”

“Enterprise customers will look for options including Blackberry for official usage. We have entry-level phones starting at about Rs 700 and data cards for high-end broadband connectivity priced at about Rs 3,000. The missing piece was an offering for mid-end consumers. The launch of the smartphones bridges the gap,” Sunil said.

MTS is also betting big on its unique high-speed broadband service `MBlaze’. Last month, MBlaze crossed 200,000 customers in nine months since its launch.

Rajeev Batra, chief information officer, SSTL, said, “With 25-30 per cent growth month-on-month, we are targeting over 500,000 clients for our high-speed wireless service by December-end.”
